On Tuesday morning, as Daniela headed toward the entrance of the high school, she heard a familiar voice behind her. âHey, Daniela!â She turned to see Kennedy running over to her. Daniela waited for her to catch up. âHowâs it going?â Kennedy eased alongside her with a smile.
âHi,â said Daniela. She couldnât help but return the smile. Everything about Kennedy was positive, and it was contagious. âIâm fine. How are you?â
âDoing good,â said Kennedy. They strolled up the steps to the school.
âIâve been thinking about Rinad,â said Kennedy. âI feel bad about what happened.â
âItâs not your fault. Really, it isnât.â
âI know.â Kennedy shrugged her shoulders and sighed. âI just wish she wasnât so angry with me.â
âSheâll be fine eventually,â said Daniela. She looked at Kennedy and smiled again. âCan we talk about something else?â
âOf course,â said Kennedy. They got to the door, and Kennedy held it open for Daniela. âReady for the game tonight?â
âYeah, Iâm excited. Iâm hoping we can keep our streak alive.â
Inside, the hallways were buzzing with students heading to first period classes. Teachers stood in the doorways of their classrooms greeting students.
âIâm really starting to like this place.â Kennedy looked at Daniela and smiled.
âIâm glad,â said Daniela.
At lunch, Daniela took a spot at her usual table and waited for Rinad. She hadnât spoken with her since practice the day before and was hoping the two of them would have a chance to talk things out. But instead of Rinad, Kennedy showed up.
âCan I join you?â she asked, standing next to Danielaâs table.
âUm.â Daniela looked around, thinking Rinad might arrive at any minute. âWell.â She didnât know what to say. She wanted to eat with Kennedy, but she knew Rinad wouldnât feel the same way. If Rinad saw her sitting with Kennedy, she would never join them, and the most important thing on Danielaâs mind was patching things up with her old friend. That wouldnât happen if Kennedy was there. âItâs just . . .â
Kennedy looked confused. âDaniela. What is it?â
âI want to eat with you,â said Daniela. âI do. But . . .â
âOK then.â Kennedy chuckled and started to sit.
âNo, you canât!â Daniela snapped. Kennedy flinched in surprise. She took a step back. âIâm sorry,â Kennedy stammered. âItâs just . . . I donât think itâs a good idea for us to eat together today. Iâm sorry.â
Kennedy looked at her sideways. âOK,â she said. âYou know, Daniela, I canât figure you out. Sometimes youâre really nice to me. Other times, you act like you want nothing to do with me. You donât make any sense.â She turned and walked away. A moment later, Daniela saw her take a seat on the other side of the cafeteria with some other members of the team. They instantly made room for her and looked happy to have her join them.
Daniela buried her head in her hands. This is such a mess.
She was in the middle of losing her best friend, and she was completely blowing the opportunity to make a new one.
